    • Muita atenção com esta palavra! Nos Estados Unidos significa "bilhão" (109) mas na Inglaterra quer dizer "trilhão" (1012).

  • Champion

    • Muito embora a palavra "campeão" em português também signifique "defensor", "paladino", essa acepção da palavra está em desuso. Portanto, nos exemplos abaixo prefira usar o termo "defensor".

    - He is definitely a champion of the homeless.
    - Martin Luther King Jr. championed the cause of civil rights.
     
     

  • Consistent

    • Não traduza "consistent" por "consistente" (solid). Esta palavra tem dois significados principais: a) coerente; b) constante. Veja os exemplos abaixo:

    - The testimony was consistent with the known facts.
    - Consistency, madam, is the first of Christian duties. Charlotte Brontë (1816 - 55), English novelist
    - I wish you would be more consistent.

     

  • Convict

    • Em geral, pode ser traduzido por "presidiário" ou "réu condenado".

    - "There is a close relationship between flowers and convicts. The fragility and delicacy of the former are of the
    same nature as the brutal insensitivity of the latter." Jean Genet
    - "It isn't true that convicts live like animals: animals have more room to move around." Mario Vargas Llosa

     

  • Corporation

    • Algumas opções são: "empresa", "companhia", "firma" ou ainda "sociedade anônima".

    - The Foreign Corrupt Practices Act passed by Congress December 7 provides for a fine of up to $1 million for any U.S. corporation found to have paid a bribe to a foreign government, political party official, or political candidate.
    - A private school is an institution run and supported by private individuals or a corporation rather than by a government or public agency.
     

  • Eventually

    • Um "campeão de audiência" na lista dos falsos cognatos, eventually não significa "eventualmente" (occasionally). Procure traduzir por a) finalmente; b) futuramente; ou ainda c) conseqüentemente. Veja os exemplos abaixo:

    - Moon blindness is a recurrent inflammation of a horse's eyes, often resulting in eventual blindness.
    - Hammurabi found an empire that was eventually destroyed by raids from Asia Minor.
    - If human beings are to survive in a nuclear age, committing acts of violence may eventually have to become as embarrassing as urinating or defecating in public are today. Myriam Miedzian, U.S. author. Boys Will Be Boys, ch. 3 (1991).

     

  • Intelligence

    • Não significa apenas "inteligência". O termo pode também ser utilizado para designar "informações", especialmente quando são "informações secretas". Portanto a expressão "Intelligence Service" deve ser traduzida por "Serviço de Informações" ou por "Serviço Secreto".

    - I am from the French intelligence.
    - They told him he was qualified for the Army intelligence.

     

  • Journal

    • Em geral, não se traduz por "jornal". A tradução mais comum é "revista", "periódico" ou "revista especializada".

    - Breakthroughs in cancer research continue to make headlines in medical journals across the world.
    - Here you can find out the latest news from journals, magazines, and newspapers around the world.

     

  • Plant

    • Use "planta" somente quando se referir a um vegetal. Traduza por "fábrica" no primeiro exemplo e por "usina" no segundo exemplo.

    - Their plants were the scenes of violent strikes that produced a strengthened labor movement.
    - Thomas Alva Edison installed the world's first central electric power plant in New York City.

     

  • Resume

    • Não significa "resumir" (summarize, sum up) mas "retomar" ou "continuar" uma atividade.

    - Warren Spahn returned from the European war to resume a career with the Boston Braves.
    - War resumed between Persia and the Ottoman Empire in 1743.

     

  • Retire

    • Pode ser traduzido por "retirar-se" mas também significa "aposentar-se".

    - Defeated at the polls, he retired from politics.
    - My grandfather retired at 65.

     

  • Sensible

    • Freqüentemente significa "sensato", "coerente", "consciente". Compare com sensitive. Dê uma olhada nos exemplos:

    - He made a sensible choice.
    - To do exactly "as your neighbors" do is the only sensible rule. Emily Post (1873–1960), U.S. hostess. Etiquette, ch. 33 (1922).
     
     

  • Sensitive

    • Significa "sensível"; "suscetível" e pode também ser traduzido por "secreto". Compare com "sensible".

    - Be careful because that film is sensitive to light.
    - A burn bag is where secret or highly sensitive documents are placed before they are burned.

     

  • Sympathetic

    • Não significa "simpático" (nice, likeable, pleasant). Traduza por a) compreensivo; b) favorável. Confira os exemplos abaixo.

    - A good father is always sympathetic.
    - He's not at all sympathetic to her proposal.

     

  • Tentative

    • Trata-se de adjetivo e geralmente se traduz por "provisório" ou "experimental".

    - It was just a tentative schedule.

     

  • Tutor

    • A tradução correta não é "tutor" (guardian). Em português, use a expressão "professor particular".

    - Sally is tutoring this summer.
    - Tutors in Math are needed.
